8-Pack Hardwired Photoelectric Smoke Alarms — Interconnected GS562A
Product description
What’s included
This kit contains eight photoelectric smoke alarms, eight matching mounting bases, connector pigtails for hardwired hookup, a set of mounting screws, and a user manual. Each alarm has a 9V battery compartment for backup power and integrated wiring terminals for 120V AC connections.
Materials and size
Each alarm is housed in a durable polymer shell (impact- and heat-resistant ABS-style plastic) with a photoelectric sensor chamber, a recessed test/silence button, and a recessed LED indicator that provides a soft status light without being intrusive. The units use a standard residential smoke alarm footprint, approximately 5–6 inches (13–15 cm) in diameter, designed to fit common ceiling mounting locations.
Power, standards and operation
These alarms are intended for connection to a 120V AC household circuit and include a 9V battery backup so the detector remains operational during power interruptions. They meet UL 217 (9th edition) performance expectations for smoke detection and are engineered to reduce false alarms from cooking fumes and steam compared with ionization-only units. The one-touch silence/mute button lets you temporarily silence nuisance alarms for up to 10 hours in some conditions. When wired together, the units are interoperable so that if one detector senses smoke all connected alarms will sound simultaneously (supporting networks of up to 12 units).
Installation notes
Install by mounting the base to the ceiling, connecting the household 120V AC wiring to the alarm’s pigtail or terminal block, and snapping the alarm to its base. Some older installations may use a different connector style; in those cases the provided pigtail or a minor rewiring and a new mounting plate will be required. The LED indicator is designed to be subtle and child-room friendly while still signaling alarm and fault states clearly.
Pros
- Photoelectric sensor reduces cooking/steam false alarms
- Interconnects up to 12 units for whole-home notification
- 9V battery backup maintains protection during outages
Cons
- May require changing pigtails or mounting plates on older systems
- A handful of users reported malfunctions or mute failures
- No assortment of brand-specific adapter pigtails included
VerdictA solid option for replacing old detectors: photoelectric sensing and UL 217 (9th ed) compliance help limit nuisance triggers while 9V battery backup keeps protection during outages. Interconnect capability (up to 12 units) speeds household alerts. Installation is straightforward for most, though older systems may require swapping the pigtail or mounting plate. A few users have reported intermitte

Installation was a breeze
I bought a house with yellowed old detectors. Disconnecting the antiquated wiring, attaching the new pigtails and mounting these took no time. With other upgrades being difficult, this one pleasantly surprised me.

Complete kit and straightforward install
Everything needed came in the box. The connectors and base differ from older gear, so a small change was necessary, but installation was quicker and simpler than I expected. Looks tidy and gives peace of mind.

Several reliability problems encountered
After a few months new alarms with fresh batteries triggered from cooking and couldn’t be silenced. They later went off randomly; fast red blinking persisted and documentation didn’t cover it. I ended up removing units to stop the noise and now have to replace the lot.

Perfect for swapping out very old detectors
Our home had original detectors from 20+ years ago. Replacing each dead unit was easy — new bases and connector clips were required, but swapping all five in under an hour was doable. Each unit tested fine both locally and as part of the full system.

Simple rewire required on older units
Units appear to work as described so far. Note: the provided pigtail didn’t match my previous brand, so I rewired each alarm and replaced mounting plates. Other brands sometimes include multiple pigtails for compatibility; these do not.
