West Lake Tactical — Pair of 1/2" x 5" Ferrocerium Fire Starter Rods
Product description
Kit contents: two ferrocerium rods only — no striker or other accessories included. Each rod measures 1/2" (12.7 mm) in diameter and 5" (127 mm) long and has a pre-drilled hole for a lanyard or chain.
Materials and weight: the rods are composed of magnesium mixed with ferrocerium alloy. Weight is approximately 3.5 oz per rod. They are designed to be struck with a hard scraper or knife edge to produce a shower of incandescent particles.
Performance: a single rod is rated for many thousands of strikes (manufacturer estimates up to about 16,000 uses). Struck properly, the embers reach temperatures around 5,500 °F (about 3,000 °C) and will ignite tinder even when damp or in windy conditions. Ideal uses include bushcraft, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, EDC, emergency kits, and lighting grills or camp stoves.
Handling notes: because the package does not include a striker, a sharp knife, metal scraper, or box-cutter blade works well. The larger diameter gives more usable material and longer service life but adds bulk compared with keychain-style fire steels.
Pros
- Very durable — long lifespan per rod
- Generates extremely hot sparks even in adverse conditions
- Large diameter is easier to grip with gloves
Cons
- No striker included in the package
- Heavier and bulkier than keychain ferro rods
- Not ideal for ultralight packs
VerdictA simple, rugged pair of ferrocerium rods that deliver consistent, high-temperature sparks for campsite and emergency firemaking. They’re oversized for durability and easy handling, offer very long life per rod, and are best suited to packs or dedicated fire kits rather than ultralight setups. Since no scraper is supplied, carry a knife or box cutter to get the most from them.

Great long-term value
I use one for wood heating and it’s lasted years — probably two-thirds left after hundreds of fires. Bought a backup set just in case.

Exactly what I wanted
Very large — ideal for gloved hands. Throws a good spray and lights fires easily.

Not for ultralight kits
Too heavy for minimalist packs, but if you want a massive firesteel that makes loads of sparks, these are great.

Big rods, excellent output
These are noticeably large compared with other steels. They come with a tiny chain but no striker, so I built wooden handles and epoxied them in. Sparks are plentiful and the shaving lights easily when using proper technique.

Much larger than keychain steels
These measure 1/2" by 5" so don’t expect keychain convenience. They performed well — started a fire with no problem.

Bulky but extremely effective
They throw massive, very hot sparks that ignite tinder bundles without trouble. Heavy for ultralight users, which is my only gripe.
