Fluval Plant & Shrimp Substrate — 4.4 lb Aquarium Plant Soil
Product description
Porous, plant-focused granules: The substrate is made of lightweight, porous particles that allow roots to push through easily and permit beneficial bacteria to colonize the extensive surface area, promoting biological filtration.
Maintains aquarium-friendly pH: Formulated to hold a neutral to mildly acidic pH range suited to many aquatic plants, tropical fish, and shrimp commonly kept in planted freshwater tanks.
Safe nursery habitat for shrimp: The texture and structure create hiding spaces that protect newly hatched shrimp from predators until they grow large enough to venture out.
Water clarity and stain control: Designed not to leach tannins, it helps avoid water discoloration and can counteract organic staining from driftwood when set up correctly.
Packaging and amount: Supplied in a 4.4 lb bag, suitable for smaller aquariums or topping/targeting specific areas in larger setups.
Use and supplementation: Best used as a base for planted tanks; roots take hold quickly in the porous matrix. For long-term nutrient balance, consider pairing it with root-focused plant fertilizers or micronutrient supplements to keep plants vigorous over time.
Installation tips: Because the grains are lightweight, take care when filling the aquarium to minimize clouding—slow fills and gentle water dispersion help the substrate settle without excessive turbidity.
Pros
- Porous granules promote fast root growth and bacterial colonization
- Helps maintain neutral to slightly acidic pH suitable for plants and shrimp
- Lightweight, non-compacting texture provides shelter for baby shrimp
Cons
- Can cloud water during setup if disturbed; careful filling needed
- Nutrients in the substrate may diminish over time and need supplements
- Smaller bag sizes may be insufficient for larger aquascapes
VerdictA purpose-built planted aquarium substrate that encourages rapid root penetration and biological colonization. Its porous granules are designed to stay loose rather than compact, offering an accessible nutrient matrix for plant roots and shelter for baby shrimp. It also helps preserve water clarity and gently supports a neutral-to-slightly-acidic pH — a good all-around option for hobbyists who wan

Game-changer for planted tanks and tissue culture
Wished I’d used this earlier — after switching several tanks to it my plants thrived. I layer it underneath decorative sand for depth and appearance; roots anchor deeply and growth explodes. For tissue culture plants, others have recommended mixing mostly perlite with some of this substrate during acclimation.

Top substrate for shrimp and planted aquariums
I’ve repurchased multiple times. In shrimp tanks the plants flourish, roots establish quickly, and water stays clear after rinsing. Shrimp thrive on it; the texture doesn’t compact and feels high quality despite costing a bit more.

Fantastic substrate at a solid value
Plants take to it well, it looks natural, has no bad smell, and fish seem comfortable. It can be a bit tricky at first — I recommend a light single rinse, pour it in, cover with foil, and fill the tank slowly. Disturb the top layer gently to remove fine dust, drain the dirty water, then refill; a filter clears lingering cloudiness within a day. Avoid splashing brown water onto plant leaves to reduce algae risk.

Dark base really makes plants stand out
The black color highlights greenery beautifully and seems to supply the nutrients plants need. It settles by the next day but can tint water if you stir it up too much. Best price I've seen for this quality.

Recommended for healthy plants
Did a good job reducing plant rot and still looked fine even with minimal rinsing — not overly dusty. I recommend it.

Excellent pick for a planted tank
Bought for my 10-gallon and it’s performing nicely. The plants adjusted quickly and the substrate gives the tank an attractive finish. Happy with the results and would choose it again.

Supports quick plant establishment
Worked well for my initial setup and noticeably helped plants root and grow. It provides a solid base for early growth; nutrients are good early on but like most aquasoils they can be depleted over time, so I supplement with root tabs to keep plants vigorous.

Budget-friendly and effective
Gave my tank a natural, riverbed feel right away. It rinses easily and didn’t leave long-lasting cloudiness when set up carefully. Plants look healthier, the texture is comfortable for fish, and it spreads evenly for neat aquascaping.

Ideal planted tank soil — skip pre-rinsing
Worth the cost — the granules hold together if you don’t crush them. Fish and shrimp are fine with it and plants do very well. Tip: block or slow the water flow while filling to avoid disturbing the soil. Contrary to some directions, I didn’t pre-rinse and avoided a big mess; fill gently and the tank clears quickly.

Doesn't cloud water when handled right
Covered with gravel it didn’t cloud the water at all. Pour slowly during setup. We’ll see how plants perform long term.

Solid choice for nano tanks
I switched from plain sand because my plants were slowing down. Plants look healthier now, though I didn’t notice anything miraculous. The 4.4 lb bag was more than I needed for my nano, so I have half left.
