Dwarf Frog Mini Catappa Leaves — 50-Pack Leaf Litter for Vivaria
Product description
What’s included: a pack containing 50 dried, small (mini) Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves intended for use as leaf litter in terrariums and aquariums.
Material and form: the leaves are natural catappa (Indian almond) that have been dried. They are sized to suit smaller species and bioactive setups rather than large flat leaves, so they’re easier to distribute evenly on the substrate.
How to use: scatter a layer of the leaves over the floor of your vivarium or place them in aquarium water. Animals hopping or walking over them will crush the leaves, and as they decompose they release tannins and organic compounds into the substrate and water. Those tannins can gently tint water and influence soil chemistry while providing antimicrobial benefits cited by hobbyists.
Ecological benefits: the leaf litter creates a microhabitat for isopods, springtails and other small detritivores. Those organisms feed on the decaying leaves and serve as a steady food source for insectivores such as frogs, toads and small reptiles, helping maintain a clean, self-sustaining enclosure.
Behavioral and environmental advantages: a generous layer of leaf litter reduces mud contact for terrestrial amphibians and gives them dry, traction-friendly surfaces to move on. The litter also helps stabilize substrate temperature and offers insulation for seasonal behaviors like hibernation or estivation; burrowing species may dig down toward the leaf layer and make hide spots within it.
Pros
- Encourages microfauna and a natural cleanup crew
- Provides hiding places and substrate enrichment
- Sized for small frogs and compact enclosures
Cons
- Pack may not fully cover larger tanks or vivaria
- Leaf condition and packaging can vary
- Will release tannins that change water color and pH
VerdictThese mini catappa leaves work well as authentic leaf litter in small vivaria and tanks. They create hiding spots and attract microfauna, slowly break down to release tannins and organic matter, and help keep frogs cleaner and more comfortable. Buyers should note the leaves are small and the pack may only partially cover larger enclosures; condition and packaging can vary. Overall, a convenient op

Exactly what I needed for toad setups
Bought several packs to furnish tanks and terrariums for toads hatched from eggs. They’re simply dried leaves that behave as expected once placed — no mold, mildew, or oily residue in water. I haven’t measured pH changes, but these are a reliable, clean option if you’d rather not forage outdoors.

Durable, not crumbly — shelter for aquatic pets
These leaves are fairly leathery so they don’t just fall apart. I used them for my Dwarf African Frogs and mystery snails, both of which take advantage of the hiding spots and edges.

Safe edges for tarantula enclosures
Leaves have smooth rounded edges so there’s no risk of puncturing a spider’s abdomen. My tarantulas use them in webbing and as tunnel material.

Natural aesthetic my Betta enjoys
My Betta seems to like the leaves, and they give the tank a pleasing, natural look while providing some shelter.

Perfect for tiny bioactive builds
I needed small leaves for a five-gallon terrestrial tarantula setup and didn’t want to collect and boil material. These minis were the right size and saved a lot of prep work.

Covers more floor than expected
I used three packages to cover the base of a 24x18x24 enclosure. Only a couple of leaves were broken and I haven’t seen pests on them. Bags are modest in size but spread out farther than I thought.

Arrived in poor condition
The package wasn’t like the photo and contained almost nothing; many leaves were already heavily damaged.

Packaging differed from photo
The product itself was what I wanted, but it arrived in two clear sealed pouches rather than the pictured packaging. Quantity was a bit lower than expected, though the quality was fine.

Very small, crushed leaves
Tiny packet of brown, brittle, smashed leaves.

Exactly the small leaves I searched for
I don’t get the complaints about leaf size — these are sold as minis and that’s what I wanted. Much better than huge flats I had to tear up. I estimate around 60–70 small leaves across the two flat compartments and am very pleased with the authentic look.

Not a lot for the price
I bought these to help kick-start a cleanup crew instead of collecting leaves myself. They’re exactly as advertised but the quantity felt small for my needs, so I had to add another type to get fuller coverage. Product is honest, I just misjudged how much I’d need.

Arrived as described — geckos approve
Delivery was prompt and the product matched the listing. My leopard geckos love the crunchy texture and my isopods happily consume the litter. Works out well for both critters.
