Purigen Aquarium Organic Filtration Resin — 100 ml Media
Product description
Purigen is a synthetic polymer bead designed to scavenge soluble organic compounds from aquarium water. The product is sold as a 100 ml supply of beads that changes color as it adsorbs impurities.
The media is regenerable: once exhausted it can be chemically cleaned and returned to service to restore its adsorption capacity. It targets dissolved organics that cause discoloration and odors and helps reduce ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels by removing their organic precursors.
To use, place the beads in a fine mesh bag or inside a filter cartridge and position it in the filter flow path—hang-on-back, canister or other flow-through stages work well. The beads perform in both freshwater and marine setups and are compatible with planted tanks when used as directed.
Pros
- Regenerable for repeated use
- Effectively removes tannins and dissolved organics
- Improves clarity and reduces nitrogenous compounds
Cons
- Must be chemically recharged to restore capacity
- Not a substitute for routine water changes
- Some users uncomfortable with the regeneration process
VerdictPurigen is a powerful, reusable resin that quickly restores water clarity and reduces organic load in both fresh and saltwater tanks. It works well in hang-on-back or canister filters when placed inside a media bag or cartridge, and many users report dramatic improvements within hours to days. The beads vary in shade as they absorb waste and can be chemically regenerated to restore capacity, makin

Tannins gone in under a day
Added it after introducing new driftwood and the tannin color was gone in less than 24 hours. I used a HOB filter and was very impressed.

Removed yellow tint over days
Took about three days in my 55 gal to clear a yellow tint. Don’t expect it to replace good maintenance, but it gradually cleared the color and likely works faster in smaller tanks.

Cleared my betta tank, reusable
In my 5.5 g betta tank gravel movement kept clouding the water. I put a mesh bag of the resin inside a spare HOB with filter floss and within hours the water returned to clear. I dried the bag between uses and appreciate that it can be recharged and reused — my fish looks healthier with cleaner water.

Visible clarity improvement
A hobbyist recommended it for high nitrates and murky water. I put it in a HOB and the water got noticeably clearer with no negative effects on the fish. Bought more for other tanks.

Best water polisher I've used
This is the most effective polishing media I've tried. I liked it enough to buy additional packs for other aquariums.

Purigen cleared reddish water
I was skeptical at first because wood made the water very reddish. Those doubts disappeared — the water became glass-clear after using the resin.

Safe with live plants, effective regeneration
I tried this in a planted setup and saw no nutrient deficiency after two weeks. It cleared cloudy water in about 12 hours and reduced NO3 from ~15 ppm to zero within a week.
