MOTU M4 4-in/4-out USB-C Audio Interface
Product description
What’s included and compatibility:
The M4 ships ready to run with a USB-C cable and access to over 6GB of downloadable content and software for Mac, Windows and iOS platforms. It’s bus-powered when connected to a compatible host, making it easy to use with laptops and portable setups.
Build, materials and footprint:
The interface features a sturdy metal enclosure and a compact desktop footprint designed to sit beside monitors or on a small desktop. Controls are front-facing for quick access, and the unit’s physical meters and monitoring knob give tactile control without diving into software.
I/O and core features:
This is a 4-in / 4-out device with two combination mic/instrument preamps on the front, plus balanced outputs for monitors and additional line outputs. It offers hardware direct monitoring for zero-latency tracking, a clear LCD-style meter display for input and output levels, and dedicated loopback routing useful for streaming and capture.
How it’s used:
Typical workflows include recording vocals and instruments, multichannel playback and routing for streaming or podcasting, and low-latency tracking in DAWs via the vendor drivers. Loopback lets you capture system audio and mic signals together, while the front-panel mix control makes on-the-fly monitoring adjustments simple.
Pros
- Transparent, low-noise preamps
- Bus-powered USB-C with compact metal chassis
- LCD meters plus hardware direct-monitoring and loopback
Cons
- Headphone output can be limited on bus power
- May be more I/O than some users need
- Some initial driver/DAW setup may be required
VerdictThe MOTU M4 delivers very transparent sound, dependable drivers, and thoughtful studio features in a small metal chassis. It’s a strong choice for home studios, streamers, and anyone who needs clean preamps, handy loopback routing and clear visual metering — all without a separate power brick. If you need more headphone drive or a larger I/O count, look at other models, but for most tracking and l

Solid build, easy to operate
Sturdy steel case and very intuitive front-panel controls made setup quick. Drivers were easy to install and meters are simple to read. I tested it with JamKazam and saw acceptable latency, though a bit-rate interaction with that app needs more investigation. Overall very happy so far.

Well made and cross-platform friendly
Works smoothly on Mac without extra bloatware and also runs fine on Windows. Hooked it to KRK monitors and it sounded comparable to my older interface but with a nicer feel and build. The screen is mostly cosmetic for me but looks great.

Stays my go-to interface
I’ve returned to MOTU gear for years because of the transparent sound and rock-solid Windows drivers. The preamps are very clean with a low noise floor and negligible jitter. LED meters and the physical direct-monitor mix control stand out at this level. Only real drawback is the headphone amp’s limited power when running from USB bus power.

Five stars
Excellent unit — I’d buy it again if needed.

Excellent for PC use and meetings
Using it as my daily PC I/O has been great — independent monitor and headphone volumes are very convenient. The LCD helps dial gain and the mix between playback and input monitoring makes calls and streams feel natural. ASIO drivers provide low latency and the loopback routing is great for capturing system audio.

My compact workhorse
Feels very solid with chunky knobs and reliable USB power so one less cable. Plug-and-play with MacBook was immediate. The larger MIDI ports came in handy for an older synth, and the screen gives a clearer view of levels than small LED strips.

Low noise but a few setup bumps
Had an initial hiccup with Studio One that turned out to be my DAW setting, not the interface. Support sorted it quickly and recordings sounded clean. If you’re new to audio, expect a small learning curve, but the interface itself is a solid pick for beginners and experienced users alike.

Powerful interface for pros and enthusiasts
Impressed from the first use — the M4 delivers detailed, clear audio and captures subtle nuances well. Setup was straightforward and the control software is intuitive, making it easy to tweak routing and levels for recordings and mixes.

Great for low-latency rhythm gaming
Upgraded from a Scarlett and appreciated the extra headphone gain and the two rear line inputs for instruments. For rhythm games, the low latency and ability to route audio directly make a noticeable difference. Good choice if you need precise timing and extra I/O.

A clear step up from Scarlett
Switched from a Scarlett and found noticeably better audio quality, build and usability. USB-C connection feels more capable and the unit handles multiple live sources without issue. For my streaming and multichannel work it’s been reliable and responsive.

Perfect when you need the extra I/O
After trying several options, this fit my home studio best. Bus-powered USB-C is convenient, preamps are quiet, and there are enough outputs to add an amp or separate monitor feeds. Built-in loopback and low latency are excellent. The display is nice but I mostly monitor in my DAW; included software is useful for newcomers.
