Atago PAL-1 Portable Digital Brix Refractometer (0.0–53.0% Brix)
Product description
The Atago PAL-1 is a compact handheld digital refractometer designed to convert refractive index into % Brix and display sugar concentration and sample temperature. The unit ships with the PAL-1 refractometer, two AAA alkaline batteries already installed, a plastic protective storage case, and simple instructions for setup and calibration. The sample well takes very small volumes (about 0.3 mL), and the instrument is calibrated with plain water using the zero key.
The housing is lightweight (approx. 100 g) and measures 10.9 × 5.5 × 3.1 cm (height × width × depth), with ergonomically curved sides for comfortable one-handed use and rounded edges for pocket carry. The device incorporates an LCD digital display that produces a readout in about three seconds and shows both Brix and temperature values. Measurement resolution is 0.1% for Brix and 0.1°C for temperature, with stated Brix accuracy of ±0.2% and temperature accuracy of ±1°C.
Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) is built in, allowing accurate readings across a wide sample temperature span; the instrument accepts sample temperatures roughly between 10 and 100°C (ATC) and reports a measured temperature range of 9.0 to 99.9°C. An External Light Interference (ELI) alert notifies the user when strong ambient light may affect a reading. The sample stage and well are shaped to minimize spills during measurement.
The PAL-1 carries an IP65 ingress protection rating, meaning the body is protected against dust and low-pressure water jets and can be rinsed under running water for cleaning. Typical measurement time is three seconds. Power is supplied by two AAA batteries included in the box. The PAL-1 is intended for liquid measurements and is commonly used in culinary, food and beverage, agricultural, pharmaceutical, educational, and environmental water-testing contexts.
Pros
- Pocketable and lightweight for field use
- Fast, repeatable 3-second digital readings with ATC
- IP65-rated housing and easy-to-clean sample well
Cons
- May be vulnerable to impact from drops
- Backlight or display issues reported by some users
- Designed for liquids only, not solids
VerdictA pocketable, accurate digital Brix meter that delivers quick, repeatable readings and useful field features like ATC and IP65 protection. Well suited for food, beverage, agricultural and lab checks. Sturdiness against drops is mixed per user reports, so handle with care.

Very accurate readings
Performs excellently. My measurements have been consistently precise.

Clear display but handle with care
Works as intended and is much easier to read than prism types — no guessing between close values. Not sure I'd subject it to many drops; I got lucky when I dropped mine once.

Reliable and long-lived
Does the job well and was a fair purchase. In my 40+ years I've replaced only a few — with careful use they can last about a decade.

Handy pocket refractometer
Very accurate digital unit. Buttons are straightforward, has a display light, and feels comfortable in the hand.

Works but minor issues
A bit disappointed — second unit I bought here has no backlight, though the display is still legible. Next time I'll consider buying direct from the maker for warranty peace of mind.

Build quality concerns
Be careful — mine failed after a single drop. This was the third unit with similar faults: start button rarely responds and internal parts feel loose.

Good for reef tank use — Brix to SG notes
Calibrated easily and worked on my reef tank. Useful Brix-to-SG reference: 31 ppt = 3.9 Brix = 1.0233 SG; 32 ppt = 4.1 = 1.0241; 33 ppt = 4.2 = 1.0249; 34 ppt = 4.3 = 1.0256; 35 ppt = 4.4 = 1.0264; 36 ppt = 4.5 = 1.0271; 37 ppt = 4.7 = 1.0279.

Very pleased with performance
Extremely happy with this digital refractometer. More accurate than the old flap-style units and easier to keep clean. Temperature compensation shown on the display is a great feature.

Fast, consistent and practical
Compared to optical refractometers this digital model is excellent. Zeroes quickly with tap water, delivers rapid, consistent Brix readings. I use it on my organic farm for fruits and vegetables — well worth it.
