3-Pack Small Trimming Planes (1" x 3-1/2") — Stanley 12-101
Product description
This package contains three identical small trimming planes, each with a 1-inch cutting iron and a 3-1/2-inch overall length. They are built for light shaping tasks such as modeling, sculpture, and fine trim adjustments where a compact tool is advantageous.
The soles are finished in black with a nickel plating for improved durability and resistance to wear. The compact cutter width and short body allow access in tight spaces and make the planes easy to handle when working on narrow profiles or delicate edges.
Intended for quick on-site tweaking and fine hand work, these planes perform best after minor setup work — a touch of sole flattening, honing and blade alignment. Their small size keeps them portable for ladder or trim tasks, though that compactness can make them easy to misplace in a busy workspace.
Pros
- Compact and lightweight for tight spaces
- Durable nickel-plated, black-finish sole
- Set of three for spare or multi-use
Cons
- Requires setup out of the box
- Limited grip area for hand control
- Very small size can be easy to misplace
VerdictA useful set for anyone needing small, portable bench planes for delicate or tight work. They arrive with basic fittings that benefit from a little setup: flattening the sole, tuning the blade and adjusting the throat. Once dialed in they produce fine, controlled shavings on narrow surfaces and make quick trim corrections easier, especially when a full-size plane is impractical.

Good value with minor setup
Good small plane for the price. The sole needed some flattening and the blade required tuning, and the mouth is very basic — but after setup it cuts tidy, thin shavings on narrow edges. Would prefer a bit more mass for hand control.

Quick to set up and handy on ladders
I bought a single unit locally and set it up in minutes. Loosen the thumbscrew, hold the blade, seat the plane on a soft surface blade-down to let it settle, then tighten. It sliced cedar trim cleanly and was perfect for adjusting the pointed end of triangular trim while on a ladder. Very portable, though easy to lose amid clutter.
