Hosa Sidekick Passive DI Box — 1/4" TS to XLR3M Direct Box
Product description
This Sidekick passive direct box converts an unbalanced 1/4" TS instrument-level signal into a balanced XLR3M mic/line-level output using an internal isolation transformer. The unit includes a 1/4" TS input, an XLR3M output, a ground-lift toggle to help eliminate hum, and an INST/LINE selector that alters the input level handling.
Constructed from a heavy-gauge metal chassis, the enclosure is intended for stage and studio use and resists the bumps of live work. The connectors are standard-sized (1/4" TS jack and three-pin male XLR) so it fits with conventional stage cabling and snakes.
To use, plug an instrument or line-level source into the TS jack and run the XLR out to a mixer or PA. The device passes a clean, balanced signal ideally suited for feeding DSP or mixing consoles; switch to LINE when you need attenuation/drive handling, and use the ground-lift to cure ground-loop noise. As a passive unit, it requires no batteries or phantom power and is designed for simplicity and reliability.
Pros
- Simple, no-power passive operation
- Solid metal housing for live use
- Useful ground-lift and INST/LINE controls
Cons
- Lacks advanced features of high-end DI boxes
- No documented full manual included
- Not intended for speaker-level inputs
VerdictA straightforward, no-frills passive DI that cleans up long cable runs and feeds balanced signals to mixing desks without any power needs. It’s ruggedly built, offers useful switches (ground lift and instrument/line), and delivers reliable noise rejection. Not as feature-rich as premium boutique boxes, but it performs the essential role dependably and at sensible value.

Simple and effective
Solved a persistent hum issue quickly. The case is tough; wish it had more mounting screws but overall works as intended.

Reliable for weekly use
I run front of house most weekends and bought several of these. They’ve been consistent and trouble-free.

Dependable passive DI for stage use
As many know, changing high-impedance instruments to low helps retain highs and reduce loss. Passive DI units like this avoid battery/phantom hassles and provide reliable noise reduction on stage. Good choice for first-time DI buyers.

This DI is well made with a comfortable, sturdy layout. It feels high quality in use.

Consistent performance
Bought two at different times; both perform well. One previous unit I had was slightly quieter by about 1 dB, frequency response is very similar, volume differences negligible.

Noticeable improvement for our church mix
We use three on stage for acoustic-electric, electric piano and a playback source to the snake. They’ve lowered board gain needs and resulted in cleaner service recordings.

Does the passive job well
I usually reach for active DIs, but wanted a passive for a specific source. Used this at a church service to send a MIDI keyboard (via laptop) to the board — clean, quiet signal and the line/instrument switch made a noticeable difference. Ground-lift is handy. Feels solid; not a boutique unit but dependable.

Clean, uncolored signal
Produces a pure representation of the guitar with no need for added gain at the mixer. Very transparent.

Great housing for a custom build
I stripped this box and installed a Jensen transformer and bespoke electronics — the steel enclosure and connector layout were ideal. For modding, it’s a very usable chassis.

Basic but serviceable
It gets the job done as an inexpensive starter DI. No surprises.

Switch behavior and missing manual
There’s no official manual and the INST/LINE wording can confuse; experimenting showed the LINE position applies about −40 dB attenuation. Packaging wording might be misleading — do not connect a powered speaker output to this unit, it’s for instrument/line-level only.

Surprised by the performance
Bought one to try with my electric bass and it performed without buzz or hiss. Solid little DI — exceeded my expectations.
